How this board and batten calculator works

The whole trick is landing the battens on an even spacing with one at each end. Round the wall into a whole number of bays, add one, and the spacing falls out exactly:

bays = round(wall width ÷ target spacing) · battens = bays + 1
on-center = wall width ÷ bays · gap = on-center − batten width

At the defaults — a 12 ft wide, 8 ft tall wall, 3.5 in battens at a 16 in target — that is 9 bays, so 10 battens at exactly 16 in on center with 12.5 in gaps. The trim totals 104 linear feet15 boards, about $120; the full chain is in the worked example below.

Boards, battens, and rails

“Board and batten” covers a true siding and a faux accent wall — same look, two builds:

  • Battens: the narrow vertical strips — 1×2, 1×3 or 1×4 — spaced evenly. The count is what this tool solves.
  • Boards: in true siding, the wide vertical boards (1×8, 1×10) the battens cover the seams of; a faux wall skips them and fastens battens to drywall.
  • Rails: the horizontal top and bottom trim that caps the battens; add a middle rail for a ledge or a two-tone wall.
  • Interior vs exterior: MDF and primed pine indoors; cedar, PVC or fiber cement outdoors — same layout, priced on the siding calculator when it’s a whole exterior.

Batten spacing, rails, and landing on the corners

Spacing is aesthetic, not structural — so the rules are about how it reads, not what it holds:

  • Spacing: 12–16 in reads traditional; 20–24 in reads modern. Most accent walls settle at 16–20 in.
  • End battens: put one on each corner so the two outside gaps match the interior ones — the calculator assumes this.
  • Rails: top and bottom on nearly every job; a middle rail adds a shelf line or splits a two-color wall.
  • Batten width: wider battens (1×4) with wider gaps read bolder; thin battens (1×2) look delicate.
  • Even is the goal: a gap that’s a few inches off at one end is the tell of a bad layout — let the math set it.

How to lay out board and batten

  1. Measure the wall width and height; for a whole exterior, run each wall separately.
  2. Pick a target spacing — 16 to 20 in for most walls — and the batten width you’ll use.
  3. Choose the rails — top and bottom, or add a middle — from the layout guide.
  4. Read the batten count and the exact on-center spacing, and mark from both corners toward the middle.
  5. Take the trim total and boards, then add fasteners, adhesive and paint from the exclusions below.

Worked example: a 12 ft board and batten wall

The default, worked line by line — a 12 ft wide, 8 ft tall wall, 3.5 in battens at a 16 in target, top and bottom rails, 10% waste, 8 ft boards at $8:

Widen the target to 24 in and the same wall drops to 7 battens and a calmer, modern face; tighten to 12 in and it climbs to 13 for a traditional look. The count changes, the method doesn’t — and because the ends always land on the corners, every gap on the wall comes out identical.

What this board and batten estimate doesn’t include

The count and trim total are the battens and rails; the wall around them needs a few more things:

  • The wall behind. Drywall or sheathing for a faux wall, or the wide vertical boards for true siding.
  • House wrap. The weather barrier behind exterior board and batten.
  • Fasteners and adhesive. Brad nails and construction adhesive to set the battens.
  • Caulk and filler. To seal batten edges and fill nail holes before paint.
  • Paint or finish. Primer and topcoat — usually most of an interior job’s time.

How do I space board and batten evenly?

Divide the wall width by your target spacing and round to a whole number of bays, then the battens are one more than that — one at each end. A 12 ft wall at a 16 in target is 9 bays, so 10 battens land at exactly 16 in on center with 12.5 in gaps between 3.5 in battens. The calculator does the rounding so the spacing comes out even.

How far apart should board and batten battens be?

12 to 24 inches on center is the usual range — it is a look, not a code. Tighter spacing (12–16 in) reads traditional and busy; wider (20–24 in) reads modern and calm. Pick the spacing you like and let the end battens fall on the corners so the two outside gaps match the rest.

How many battens do I need for a 16 foot wall?

What is the best board and batten spacing for an accent wall?

For an interior accent wall, 16 to 20 in on center is the sweet spot — close enough to look intentional, open enough not to feel like a fence. Run the battens floor to ceiling between a top and bottom rail; set the calculator to two rails, or three if you want a mid-wall ledge.

How do you calculate board and batten siding?

For real vertical-board siding, the battens cover the seams between the wide boards, so the batten count follows the boards plus the two ends. For the common batten-on-panel look, space the battens evenly with this tool. Either way, total the batten runs plus the horizontal rails for the trim linear feet, then divide by the board length you buy.

How much does board and batten cost?

The default 12 × 8 ft wall is about 104 linear feet of trim — 15 eight-foot boards, roughly $120 in material at $8 a board. MDF or primed pine battens are cheapest for interior work; cedar, PVC or fiber-cement battens for exterior cost several times more but hold up outdoors.
